CRUISE NEWS YOU CAN USE

If you are regular visitors to our website, you will have read many of our photo narratives of our cruise experiences around the world and learned of our love of unpacking once and watching the world float by in front of you—in unsurpassed luxury.

And if you are new to our site (and thinking of cruising as a vacation option) we hope you will be inspired to learn more about the cruise experience and how it may just change the way you travel in the future.

Here are two exciting new cruise opportunities we just learned learned about:

Discover the ANCIENT wonders of Egypt on A Viking Cruise

We’ve sailed many times with Viking Cruises, both on ocean and river cruises, and the experience never failed to create unforgettable travel memories. Our staterooms were always spacious and comfortable, and it was truly a daily delight to see castles and incredible scenery roll by as we relaxed on our balcony. The included shore excursions were led by outstanding local guides who made history come alive with their insightful commentary.

That being said, we can only imagine experiencing the wonders of Egypt on the 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary. Guests begin with a three-night stay at a first-class hotel in Cairo, where they can visit iconic sites such as the Great Pyramids of Giza, the necropolis of Saqqara (also known as “Sakkara”) and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. They then fly to Luxor, where they visit the Temples of Luxor and Karnak before boarding a Viking river ship for an eight-day roundtrip cruise on the Nile River, featuring Privileged Access to the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens and the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings, and excursions to the Temple of Khnum in Esna, the Dendera Temple complex in Qena, the temples at Abu Simbel and the High Dam in Aswan, and a visit to a colorful Nubian village, where guests can experience a traditional elementary school. Finally, the journey concludes with a flight back to Cairo for a final night in the ancient city.

Can you ask for anything more in such an itinerary?

For guests looking to extend their journey, Viking also offers Pre and Post Extensions that provide Privileged Access to archives and exhibits. Additional offerings include a new three-night Pre-Extension in Istanbul, where guests can visit the timeless city and important religious sites including the “Blue Mosque” and the legendary Hagia Sophia. Before their voyage, guests can also choose to extend their journey in Jerusalem, exploring the ancient history and vibrant culture of Israel’s fascinating capital. After concluding the river voyage, guests can also extend the journey with a 4-night Post-Extension to Jordan – Petra, Dead Sea & Amman to view Roman antiquities at Jerash, Crusader-era castles at Kerak or Shobak and experience the lost city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Enjoy a Holiday SALE on America’s Scenic Rivers

While European holiday cruises along the rivers are very romantic, and well worth the trip, for some Americans the long flight to Europe and all the logistics involved might be too much trip planning.

VIKING CRUISES ENTERS A NEW FRONTIER

Last week, my husband Tony and I had the honor of attending the Beverly Hills gala announcing the naming of Viking’s newest ocean ship, the Viking Jupiter. But that wasn’t all that was celebrated that night.

Torstein Hagen, Founder and Chairman of Viking, announced the unveiling of Viking Expeditions, which will begin sailing in January 2022 with its first vessel, Viking Octantis, embarking on voyages to Antarctica and North America’s Great Lakes (Viking’s arrival to the Great Lakes will bring the newest and most modern vessels ever to explore this region of North America).  A second expedition vessel, Viking Polaris, will debut in August 2022, sailing to Antarctica and the Arctic.

The new Polar Class 6 Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris will host 378 guests in 189 staterooms; both ships are currently under construction. The ships are optimally sized and built for expeditions – small enough to navigate remote polar regions and the St. Lawrence River, while large enough to provide superior handling and stability in the roughest seas.

Excitement was high during the presentation, and no wonder. As seasoned cruise ship travel journalists, Tony and I can personally attest to the exceptional quality of every cruise we’ve experienced on board a Viking ship.

There’s no question Viking is a major force in the cruise ship industry. In the last eight years alone, the company has introduced more than 60 new river cruise ships and six ocean cruise ships to become the largest small ship cruise line with a current fleet of 79 river and ocean vessels around the world. In 2020, Viking will launch seven new river ships. Six more ocean sister ships are on order, with options for four additional ships. These options could bring Viking’s total ocean fleet to 16 ships by 2027.

Beginning January 15, 2020 through February 29, 2020, U.S. residents can take advantage of an inaugural offer on 2022 & 2023 Viking Expedition itineraries. For additional information, contact Viking at 1-800-2-VIKING (1-800-284-5464) or visit www.viking.com.

Juneau: Picturesque Portal to Alaska's Amazing Wonders

Please enjoy my 10BEST/USA TODAY photo essay on the beautiful city of Juneau, Alaska.

Juneau's colorful history and incredible scenery began drawing visitors back in the early 1900's. Today, the picturesque city, which is the capital of Alaska, is a popular cruise port and a favorite destination among adventure travelers.

Cruise ships of all sizes make their way down the Gastineau Channel from Juneau to explore Alaska's Inside Passage and Glacier Bay National Park. Juneau itself offers a wide variety of visitor activities and amenities. It is home to the breathtaking Mendenhall Glacier, one of the world's few urban, "drive up" glaciers.
